The Hi-Lo system was developed by Harvey Dubner in 1963 and popularized by Stanford Wong and others. It remains the most widely taught card counting system today because it strikes the perfect balance between power and simplicity. Professional card counters have used Hi-Lo to win millions from casinos around the world.
Why Hi-Lo is the Best System for Most Players
There are dozens of card counting systems โ Omega II, Wong Halves, Red Seven, KO, and many more. So why do most professionals still recommend Hi-Lo?
| System | Difficulty | Edge | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hi-Lo | Easy | ~1% | Beginners and intermediates |
| KO (Knockout) | Easy | ~0.9% | Beginners who skip true count |
| Omega II | Hard | ~1.2% | Advanced players |
| Wong Halves | Very Hard | ~1.3% | Expert players only |
The difference in edge between Hi-Lo and more complex systems is tiny โ fractions of a percent. But the difficulty increase is enormous. For most players Hi-Lo is the optimal choice: powerful enough to generate a real edge, simple enough to execute accurately under casino conditions.
The Hi-Lo Values
Every card in the deck is assigned one of three values. You adjust your running count by this value every time a card is dealt โ to any player, to the dealer, to everyone at the table.
Why This Works Mathematically
In a standard deck there are exactly 20 low cards (2-6), 12 neutral cards (7-9), and 20 high cards (10-A). The system is balanced โ a full deck always sums to exactly 0. This balance is what makes Hi-Lo one of the most accurate systems available.
Running Count vs True Count
The running count is the raw total you keep as cards are dealt. The true count converts this into a per-deck figure by dividing by the number of decks remaining. This is essential in multi-deck games because the same running count means different things depending on how many cards are left.
Running Count
Start at 0. Add or subtract 1 for each card dealt. Simple and continuous throughout the shoe.
True Count
True Count = Running Count รท Decks Remaining
Estimate the decks remaining by looking at the discard tray. If a 6-deck shoe has about half dealt, roughly 3 decks remain. Divide your running count by 3 to get the true count.
| Running Count | Decks Remaining | True Count | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| +4 | 4 | +1 | Bet 1-2x minimum |
| +4 | 2 | +2 | Bet 2-4x minimum |
| +4 | 1 | +4 | Maximum bet |
| โ6 | 3 | โ2 | Minimum bet or leave table |
Bet Spreading with Hi-Lo
The true count tells you when to bet big. A true count of +2 gives you roughly a 1% edge over the house. A true count of +3 gives you roughly a 1.5% edge. The goal is to maximize your bets during positive counts and minimize during negative ones.
A typical bet spread for a recreational counter is 1-8 โ meaning you bet 8 times your minimum when the true count is very positive. Larger spreads generate more profit but also attract more attention from casino surveillance.
Hi-Lo Playing Deviations
Beyond bet spreading, Hi-Lo also informs playing decisions that deviate from basic strategy at extreme counts. The most important ones are called the Illustrious 18 โ the 18 most profitable strategy deviations based on the true count.
The most important deviations to learn first:
| Your Hand | Dealer Shows | True Count | Deviation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | 10 | +0 or above | Stand instead of hit |
| 15 | 10 | +4 or above | Stand instead of hit |
| 12 | 3 | +2 or above | Stand instead of hit |
| 10 | 10 | +4 or above | Double instead of hit |
| Insurance | Ace | +3 or above | Take insurance |
Common Hi-Lo Mistakes to Avoid
- Losing the count after a distraction โ If you lose the count, start fresh at 0. A wrong count is worse than no count.
- Forgetting to count the dealer's hole card โ Count it when it is revealed, not before. Our trainer handles this correctly.
- Betting big immediately after a positive count โ The casino watches for sudden bet changes. Gradual bet spreading looks more natural.
- Deviating from basic strategy at wrong counts โ Only deviate when the true count is at the threshold. Deviating randomly destroys your edge.
- Playing too many hours โ Fatigue kills count accuracy. Short sessions with high concentration beat long sessions with mistakes.

Hi-Lo has a betting correlation of 0.97 which means it is extremely accurate for bet spreading purposes. More complex unbalanced and multi-level systems offer marginally higher accuracy but the practical difference at the table is minimal for most players.
Your count needs to be accurate enough to know whether the true count is positive or negative and roughly what level it is at. Exact precision matters less than consistent accuracy. Aim for zero mistakes at slow speed before increasing your pace.
Yes. In single deck games the running count and true count are essentially the same so no conversion is needed. Single deck blackjack is actually more favorable for counters because the penetration is deeper and the count swings more dramatically. However single deck games are increasingly rare in modern casinos.
